Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Special Activities Event
St. John’s continues the Christian tradition of hosting an Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, our own version of Mardi Gras! As many know, this tradition marks the celebration before Ash Wednesday, when we clear our cupboards of fat and flour before Lenten fasting begins. Pancakes and sausage cooked by the men of St. John’s will be served in Angel Hall! Mark your calendar: Tuesday, February 5th from 6:15 until 7:30 pm Tickets aren’t sold but donations are welcome at the door. In preparation for food ordering, please sign up on the Narthex table sheet or phone the Parish office (333-6022) by Monday the 4th to reserve your name with number in your party. This is a great event for newcomers and guests, so if you’ve not been a part of the St. John’s Shrove Tuesday before, please join us this year!

Ash Wednesday, the Church’s solemn commemoration of the beginning of Lent, will be observed February 6th with three services, one for School students and their families, and two for Church members. 9:00 a.m. ~ All School Chapel in the Church ~ a simple service with the Imposition of Ashes. Noon ~ in St. Francis’ Chapel ~ a service of Holy Eucharist with the imposition of ashes. 7:00 p.m. ~in the Church ~ a service of Holy Eucharist with the imposition of ashes. Ash Wednesday is an important day in the Christian Year that invites reflection on our lives in Christ.

Lenten Supper/Class Special Activities Event
St. John's Lenten Suppers begin Wednesday, February 13th, and will continue through March 12th. We begin with a light supper at 5:30 p.m. in Angel Hall. The meal will be followed by a time of reflection together on St. John’s identity and ministry. As Lent is coming very early this year, Laura has not yet completed an outline of our theme for printing in this newsletter. But we will make more information available by e-mail and in Sunday announcements. Rather than to simply focus on outreach as we have done in years past, each Wednesday we will reflect on a particular aspect of our identity. We will do this in a conversation format, led by clergy and lay leaders. When St. John’s begins the search for a rector, perhaps these conversations will help to inform the search process. Conversations will be one hour long, beginning at 6:00 p.m. and ending at 7:00 p.m.

Episcopal Church Women Meeting Women\ Event
Ladies, please join us Saturday, February 16th beginning at 11 a.m. at the home of Olivia H. Come casual and we'll sit around the tables making bracelets. This a a great activity for mothers and daughters and granddaughters because our projects are suitable for women ages 5-95. Even fumbly fingers will come away with a finished project.In addition, we'll have a light luncheon, a business meeting, and election of officers. All the time our hands will be busy making a jewel. On Sunday, September 7th, the 2008 Youth Mission Team will deliver the sermon. They will treat the Parish to their experiences during their Week of Hope in Austin, Texas. Following the morning worship service, a Mission Trip slide show will be shown in Angel Hall detailing their journey in photos. St. John’s Youth will be hosting Coffee Hour in Angel Hall in order to promote a “cookie dough” sale benefiting the 2009 Mission Trip to Savannah, Georgia! We invite everyone to join us and help support our youth.

Annual Parish Picnic Special Services Event
Please join us for the Seventh Annual St. John's Parish Picnic at Floyd Gwin Park on Sunday, September 14th. PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL HOLD CHURCH AT FLOYD GWIN PARK BEGINNING AT 10:00 a.m.: a simple service of Holy Communion followed by the picnic. As our gift, the Vestry will furnish drinks, condiments and paper goods, hamburgers and buns. Please bring a picnic dish to share and folding chairs if picnic tables do not suit you! Chilled dishes need to be brought in coolers since we eat after worship. Floyd Gwin Park is located at 10th and West County Road. We will be at the covered pavilion. A sign up sheet is located on the Narthex table to give us an idea of how many will be attending or you can RSVP by calling Cheri (333-6022) in the Parish Office. Please join us for this wonderful time of worship and fellowship!

Saturday Food Distribution Church Outreach Event
The Parish Pantry provides meals to families and individuals in our community through the generous support of our family. We are grateful to all who give of their time, talent and treasure to this much needed ministry. If you would like to help with distribution, we ask volunteers to come at 7:45 a.m. to prepare for the distribution that begins at 8:00 a.m. If you are need of food, you are welcome at St. John's!

Sunday School for ALL ages will begin September 21st from 9-9:45 a.m.. We invite everyone to join us for this intimate study of God's word.

Picture Day at St. John's Special Activities Event
An Olan Mills photographer will be here on Tuesday, September 23rd to take portraits for our directory. An appointment sheet is located on the Narthex table. We ask that if you have not yet done so, please go by and select the time most convenient for you to be photographed. You are also welcome to call Cheri in the Parish Office and I will schedule your appointment for you. Every family and individual photographed will receive a free 8 X 10 full color portrait as well as a free directory! Family photos make great gifts and these portraits will be here in plenty of time for Christmas!
